After a close call, MU softball wins Columbia regional

They watched the ball roll to the shortstop, who promptly shuffled the ball to second base. This was it, the Missouri Tigers thought, the conclusion of a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Illinois State in the championship game of the Columbia Regional on Sunday.

Only, it wasn’t over yet — and Missouri catcher Jenna Marston knew it. The Illinois State batter hit Marston’s mitt during her swing, so while her Missouri teammates celebrated, Marston simply hung back while the umpire correctly awarded the batter first because of catcher’s inference.

“She definitely got some of my glove,” said Marston, who added that she stuck her hand out too far. “I knew it right away. The umpire did, too.”

And while No. 9 Missouri went on win the game by the same score anyway — thanks in large part to another spectacular effort by star pitcher Chelsea Thomas — it wasn’t without some anxiety. The umpire’s call put runners on first and second with two outs, and a Missouri error all of a sudden loaded the bases for an Illinois State team that needed only a run to tie.
