Group not likely to reimburse KU for canceled banquet

LAWRENCE | The University of Kansas athletics department shouldn’t expect a reimbursement check from Downtown Lawrence Inc.

The department asked the merchants’ group and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to pay the $6,400 cost of canceling the basketball banquet in favor of a victory parade and celebration at Allen Fieldhouse.

The groups encouraged the athletics department to have the events to celebrate KU’s NCAA title.

In an e-mail sent to the organizations, associate athletic director Jim Marchiony asked “if the Chamber and Downtown Lawrence would team up to pay this invoice.” Attached was the $6,400 cancellation bill from the Lawrence Holidome.

Downtown Lawrence president Dan Hughes said the consensus among members was to decline the request.

The chamber’s decision was not clear Wednesday.
