Just like last season, the ball will be in Collins’ hands most of the time. The only difference is that this year, Collins won’t have to handle as much of the scoring load with Henry on the wing. Collins should be fresher late in games, when he will be expected to take over and play like an All-American.

First challenge

KU coach Bill Self will have to manage more egos this season than he ever has. He wants to play eight or nine guys in his regular rotation, which will undoubtedly leave out some very talented players. How those Jayhawks respond to their smaller roles for the good of the team will be important.

End game

For a team ranked No. 1 in the preseason, what will be classified as an acceptable finish? Do the Jayhawks have to win the whole thing? For some fans and for players like Collins and Aldrich, that may be the case. But, realistically, a trip to the Final Four should be enough to give any team a pat on the back for a good season.

Center stage

The Jayhawks can’t afford a dropoff in production from McCray, the Big 12 preseason player of the year. But, at the same time, McCray should be able to get her points more easily with the addition of the redshirt freshman Goodrich, who missed last season with a torn ACL.

First challenge

Kansas should find out early in the season how far it has to go to compete on a national level with back-to-back November games at Iowa and at home against Michigan. UCLA comes to Allen on Dec. 3.

End game

For a program that hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2000, the season will be a disappointment if the Jayhawks don’t earn a berth. KU will have exceeded expectations by winning the Big 12 or making a run to the Sweet 16.
