Former KU football coach Jack Mitchell has died.
Mitchell, who was 85, compiled a 44-42-5 record in nine seasons as KU coach from 1958-66. Mitchell led the Jayhawks to the school's first bowl victory, a 33-7 win over Rice in the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston. He was also on the sidelines for the controversial 1960 victory over No. 1 Missouri that was later forfeited because of an ineligible player.
Mitchell's nine-season tenure is tied with Glen Mason for the longest as a KU football head coach. Mark Mangino has been coach since 2002.
