C.J. Henry, a 6-3 point guard, the son of former KU basketball players Carl and Barbara Henry, commits to KU. C.J. later signs with the Yankees for a $1.575 million bonus as a first-round baseball pick.
August 2008
After three years in the minors, C.J. commits to Memphis as a walk-on.
November 2008
C.J.’s younger brother, Xavier, a top-10 rated 6-6 shooting guard, commits to Memphis over Kansas.
Early April
Memphis coach John Calipari leaves to take the Kentucky job, and the Henrys reopen their commitment.
April 23
Xavier and C.J. announce they will play basketball at Kansas.
Sunday
The Star publishes a story about the Henry family and their professional basketball aspirations. Carl Henry is quoted as saying that Xavier wouldn’t go to college unless he had to and had an interest a month ago in playing in Europe, and that current KU guards Sherron Collins and Tyshawn Taylor were not better than C.J.
Tuesday afternoon
In an interview on KCSP (610 AM), Carl Henry expresses displeasure with The Star’s story and subsequent reaction and says his sons might not play at Kansas, and says Xavier had an urge to switch his commitment to Kentucky a couple of weeks ago.
Tuesday night
Bill Self and his staff meet with the Henrys in Oklahoma City. “After we talked about it and came to a resolution … I think they’re fine,” Self said.
Late Tuesday night
Xavier Henry sends a text message to KCSP’s Cory Anderson that reads: “I’m goin to kansas and that’s final.”
Wednesday afternoon
Carl Henry apologizes to Kansas fans on Rivals.com. “What happened was a misunderstanding and I jumped the gun. …C.J. and Xavier are coming to Kansas as planned.”
