A rematch of the 2008 national championship game against Memphis and a renewal of the UCLA series mark Kansas’ non-conference basketball schedule released Tuesday.
The Jayhawks, who could start the 2009-10 season as the nation’s top-ranked team based with five returning starters, face Memphis in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center on Nov. 17.
UCLA is the opponent in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Challenge. The teams meet in Los Angeles on Dec. 6. The Tigers and Bruins were in last year’s NCAA Tournament as well as six other opponents on the Kansas’ nonconference schedule.
The Jayhawks continue series with Tennessee and Temple, which started last year at Allen Fieldhouse and will be played on the road this season, and pick up games against Michigan, California, Cornell and Radford -- all in Lawrence.
Throw in five Big 12 opponents that made the 65-team field, and Kansas will play 13 teams from last year’s tournament.
“This year’s strength of schedule should certainly measure up with the best we’ve had since I came to Kansas,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.
The Big 12 schedule hasn’t been finalized, but the Jayhawks know they’ll be traveling to Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Texas, and have Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Baylor in Lawrence.
Kansas will have three more games in Allen Fieldhouse as part of the Hall-of-Fame Classic _ the Memphis game is part of that event _ in November.
The annual Sprint Center game is Dec. 12 against La Salle.
Two exhibition games against state schools open the slate, Nov. 3 against Fort Hays State and No. 11 against Pittsburg State.
Kansas will take a nation’s best 41-game Allen Fieldhouse winning streak into the Nov. 13 regular-season opener against Hofstra.
Last season, Kansas went 11-4 in non-league games and finished 27-8 overall.
When the Jayhawks won the 2008 national championship they swept the non-conference competition.
