LAWRENCE | Kansas coach Bill Self said last week that he hoped redshirt freshman C.J. Henry would be able to play in tonight’s second exhibition game against Pittsburg State, but Self said Monday that Henry’s injured knee is not cooperating. “He’s tried to practice, and it’s swelled back up,” Self said. “I don’t know if he’ll play (tonight). He’s about 70 percent right now.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. | Sadly for Kansas, the Jayhawks don’t have Ron Prince to kick around anymore. The former Kansas State coach shaped a first-round draft pick in quarterback Josh Freeman and was perfect in two games against mighty Texas. But the sin that got Prince canned was losing in all three seasons to Kansas.

MANHATTAN, Kan. | It wasn’t that long ago that the Governor’s Cup lived in a Kansas State trophy case on a year-round basis. Like he is now, Bill Snyder was the Kansas State football coach back then, and he recalls winning the hardware so many times that the award presentations following all those victories against cross-state rival Kansas became “matter of fact” for his players.

L AWRENCE | Bill Self has a way that he saunters — which is slowly, with his eyes looking attentively around him and his shoulders slightly slumped — and it’s a style probably attributable to the Kansas basketball coach’s many social requirements. Such is the way he walked as he tried to head from his office to his car last week, a trip that should take no longer than five minutes. Unless you’re Bill Self, in which case it takes much, much longer.

In late September, nobody could have foreseen that today’s Kansas-Kansas State game would be as evenly matched as it appears to be on paper. Three in a row have gone KU’s way, and the Wildcats look ready to stop the trend. You never know what will happen in a rivalry game, but here’s our best guess: If the game is played in the trenches, K-State has the advantage. If it’s played on the perimeter, KU has the edge. When Kansas runs

Based on Mark Mangino’s logic, Lew Perkins can consider firing the Kansas football coach at the end of the season. Mangino’s decision to bench Todd Reesing late in the Jayhawks’ loss to Texas Tech signals that the 12-1 season of 2007 and the Orange Bowl victory mean nothing in 2009. Not to Mangino, the Janet “What Have You Done For Me Lately?” Jackson of college football coaches.

LAWRENCE | As college football programs have evolved, becoming bigger and bigger, a new prevailing image has formed of the modern-day head coach: He is the multimillion-dollar CEO, the steward of the ship, a man with so many big-picture responsibilities that he hardly has time to coach his team. Kansas coach Mark Mangino does not see himself this way. He is the same coach who carried the whistle as an assistant at New Castle (Pa.) High and Youngstown State. If there is wood to be sawed, he still grabs the saw. So when asked on Tuesday about the KU defense’s sudden turnaround — the unit has played well enough to win three straight games but lost all of them because of a shockingly inept offense — Mangino indicated he felt his coaching was a major factor.

LAWRENCE | Kansas coach Bill Self was strongly considering slapping a redshirt on freshman guard Elijah Johnson – until he actually saw the kid play.

LAWRENCE | How deep are the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks? Well, KU coach Bill Self said Monday that Mario Little and Travis Releford have played very well during two-plus weeks of practice. But he also said they could redshirt this season. Little and Releford, wing players with enough talent to start for most programs, will not play during tonight’s exhibition game against Fort Hays State at Allen Fieldhouse because only first-year players are allowed to play in exhibition games and still redshirt. By sitting Little and Releford, Self will have another week to decide whether they are ready to break into KU’s playing rotation.

On Sunday, a day after Kansas coach Mark Mangino pulled quarterback Todd Reesing in the fourth quarter of KU’s 42-21 loss to Texas Tech, Mangino said he had not spoken directly to Reesing about his benching. “No, he fully understands what his role is,” Mangino said. “He’s been in meetings with his position coaches and the offensive unit, and I don’t really have anything to say to him, because I think he understands clearly what’s going on. He’ll be fine. We’re encouraging him. I think he’ll be fine.”
