Kansas State juniors Ryan Mueller and Tyler Lockett won Big 12 individual awards handed out by the league’s coaches Wednesday. Mueller, a St. Thomas Aquinas grad from Leawood, was chosen defensive lineman of the year, while Lockett won special teams player of the year.
Kansas State put three players on the Associated Press’ All-Big 12 first team announced Monday. The Wildcats’ Tyler Lockett, who was chosen first team at receiver and all-purpose, was joined by defensive lineman Ryan Mueller, a St. Thomas Aquinas grad from Leawood, and defensive back Ty Zimmerman. Kansas running back James Sims was the Jayhawks’ lone first-team selection.
Spring Hill (Ala.) College senior setter Taryn Nash, a Truman High grad, was chosen college division Academic All-American of The Year by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Soccer, volleyball and football national championships are coming to the Kansas City area from 2014 to 2018, including the Division I men’s College Cup, soccer’s final four, at Sporting Park in the fall of 2015, and the Division II football championship beginning next December through 2017 at Sporting Park.
