Denis Clemente became one of the best guards in the Big 12 last season, and even more is expected of him this year. With more scoring options around him, he may not have any more 40-plus point games. But by spreading the ball around, he could end up being more effective than ever.
First challenge
The Wildcats will be tested before Thanksgiving at the Puerto Rico Tipoff — an eight-team tournament featuring Villanova, Ole Miss, Indiana and Georgia Tech. Not long after, it will take on Washington State, Xavier, UNLV and Alabama. K-State was criticized a year ago for playing a soft schedule. That won’t be the case this year.
End game
For the first time in his three years at K-State, coach Frank Martin is blessed with both experience and talent. Contending for a Big 12 title and earning a decent seed in the NCAA Tournament is the goal.
WOMEN
Probable starters
| P | No. | Player | Ht. | Yr. | PPG |
| F | 4 | Ashley Sweat | 6-2 | Sr. | 16.5 |
| F | 33 | Jalana Childs | 6-2 | So. | 3.2 |
| G | 12 | Taelor Karr | 5-8 | Fr. | N/A |
| G | 23 | Shalin Spani | 6-0 | Jr. | 3.9 |
| G | 41 | Kari Kincaid | 5-10 | Sr. | 8.0 |
| F | 34 | Branshea Brown | 6-2 | So. | 1.4 |
| G | 2 | Brittany Chambers | 5-8 | Fr. | N/A |
For the Wildcats, it all starts with Ashley Sweat. She is their best returning player and one of the team’s two leaders. If K-State is to make a smooth transition into this season she will need to keep her point production up.
First challenge
Kansas State will find out how tough it is early on. The Wildcats start with three home games, then hit the road to play Creighton, BYU and Arkansas in consecutive games.
End game
There will be a drop-off from last year’s team, which qualified for the NCAA Tournament, but how much? If the Wildcats can shrug off the loss of veteran players, win a few games in the Big 12 and make a run at the WNIT, most around the program will be satisfied.
