MANHATTAN, Kan. | Curtis Kelly made his public debut during the Kansas State basketball team’s open practice Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum. And what a debut it was.
Kelly, a 6-foot-8 junior transfer from Connecticut who sat out last season, led all scorers with 10 points during a 30-minute scrimmage and looked like one of the Wildcats’ best inside players.
What was most impressive was that those 10 points came consecutively. Midway through the scrimmage, he followed a missed shot at the basket with a layup. The next time down the floor he hit a hook shot, then followed two other missed shots and made another hook shot, leading K-State’s gray team to victory.
Not much was known about Kelly coming into the season. He has always been a promising talent, but he only averaged two points a game at UConn. If Saturday’s practice is any indication, he has a chance to make an impact for K-State.
Senior Dominique Sutton scored eight points, and junior Jacob Pullen added seven.
Overall, there was a lot of experimentation by the coaches, and most of the practice was lighthearted. Sutton drew the morning’s biggest applause by throwing down an alley-oop dunk.
Promising freshman Wally Judge made one driving basket, but didn’t score again. He came out of the scrimmage late, complaining about taking an elbow to the back.
Senior Denis Clemente pushed the ball at every opportunity in leading the offense.
