Stores such as Ace Sports & Tickets at Oak Park Mall marked down Larry Johnson’s jerseys on Monday in order to get rid of them.

The Chiefs did what they had to do on Monday — no matter how much it costs them. Scott Pioli and Todd Haley have tried to remake the persona of the Chiefs and, to be honest, they haven’t had much success. They spent a fortune on a backup quarterback, casually traded future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and alienated a hardworking, self-made man like Brian Waters. They have hung up signs warning against complaining and signed every old wide receiver they could find on the waiver wire and turned NFL Sundays into weekly horror movies. This looks to be the worst Chiefs team ever.
But, hey, it takes time to impose your will on a franchise — and you would think that Pioli and Haley are smart enough to learn from mistakes. They are driven enough to make this team fit their vision. They took a positive step on Monday. Larry Johnson may still have more yards left in him — and a parade of bad teams, led by Washington, already show interest — but it doesn’t matter.
The Chiefs have lost 30 of their last 33 games, they are one of the punch lines of the NFL, and they have to start somewhere.
Cutting Larry Johnson doesn’t make them a better team. But I think it gives them a chance to become one.
