Chiefs’ defense gives up too many big plays

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. | His coach and teammates wanted a look at the video before assessing the big plays that cost the Chiefs dearly on Sunday, but safety Mike Brown had no need for that.

Brown played them over and over is his mind and was clear about what happened on the plays that stood out in the Chiefs’ 24-21 loss to the Jaguars.

“I gave up two touchdowns today, so the way I played today I pretty much lost the game,” Brown said. “I gave up 14 points, and we lost by three points. There you go. The calculations are simple. I’m very disappointed in that. I let the team down. I feel bad about that.

“I expect better out of myself, being a veteran player.”

Brown referred to a 28-yard touchdown run by Jacksonville’s Rashad Jennings in the first quarter and a 61-yard David Garrard to Mike Sims-Walker touchdown pass in the second.

The plays helped the Chiefs dig a 24-6 hole, and they ran out of time before they could catch up.

On the first play, Brown let Jennings take him out of the play with a stiff-arm. On the second, he left Sims-Walker uncovered along the sideline and the receiver took a short pass and turned it into a game-breaking play.

“It was a rookie mistake,” Brown said. “I didn’t look out there and I left the receiver wide open.

“If you’re going to win, I can’t make those types of plays. My responsibility is the deep half of the field, and I wasn’t there. That is a huge mistake, a huge play in the game that I think cost us the game.”

The Jaguars made other big plays, including a 45-yard pass to Sims-Walker when he was again uncovered. But the Chiefs were able to limit the damage from those plays.

Jacksonville had four plays from scrimmage of more than 25 yards plus a 44-yard punt return.

“They did some things we really didn’t go over in practice,” Brown said. “You prepare for things, but we hadn’t seen those things all week, so there was some miscommunication.”

The plays ruined what otherwise could have been a big day for the Chiefs’ defense. Tamba Hali and Brandon Flowers were continually disruptive, and Wallace Gilberry had a third-down sack that pushed Jacksonville to the edge of field-goal position. Josh Scobee was then wide left on a 53-yard attempt.

Derrick Johnson also forced a fumble that put the Chiefs on the Jaguars’ 20, but the Chiefs settled for a field goal in that instance.

“It’s always the same thing,” cornerback Brandon Carr said. “We play well and we play well but there’s always a few big plays and we let the game get away from us.”

The Chiefs floundered on offense until the game’s final 5 minutes. Again, the Chiefs weren’t strong enough to overcome.

“It did appear we were out of position on a couple of those plays,” coach Todd Haley said. “We’re not going to win games or have a chance to win many games giving up big plays. That’s been a big problem on defense.”
