    TOP OF THE MORNIN'

Chiefs broadcaster says buzz about him going to TV not true

F irst, Bob Gretz is gone from the Chiefs broadcasts. Now Mitch Holthus, too?

There has been some Internet buzz that Holthus is being wooed by Fox to become one of its NFL play-by-play men.

Holthus is putting the brakes on that rumor right now.

“That’s interesting,” he said by phone. “It’s also news to me.”

Of course, there is some symmetry to the rumor: Holthus’ predecessor, Kevin Harlan, used the Chiefs’ play-by-play job as a stepping stone to the NFL in the early 1990s.

“Well, there was some discussion (with Fox) a few years back,” Holthus said. “But I have not pursued it.”

Holthus did forward this little scoop, though: He will be doing Big 12 basketball starting next season, essentially replacing the since retired Fred White.

Holthus has been doing Missouri Valley Conference basketball for the last 13 years.

“I hope I can still manage to do both next season,” he said. “I’ve really enjoyed doing the Valley games.

“But doing the Big 12 is also an unbelievable opportunity for me. I’m a Big 12 guy. I look back on my years doing K-State (1983-1996) very fondly. We don’t have a schedule yet but we’re probably talking about 15 to 20 games in the Big 12, maybe 15 for the Valley.”

As for his future as the play-by-play voice of the Chiefs, Holthus said he would have no problem if he finished out his career with the Chiefs.

“If that were to happen, I would consider that a good life,” said Holthus, who is 50. “I could be content with that.”

    Gretz’s column

Though Bob Gretz has been replaced by Kendall Gammon as the sideline reporter on KCFX and the Chiefs Radio Network, the Chiefs confirm that he won’t be bumped off as a columnist on the Chiefs’ Web site.

    Non-draft team

Rivals.com put together its list of the best players who didn’t get drafted over the weekend — its all non-drafted team.

And Missouri’s Tony Temple did get some love — he made the reserve squad on that team.

    Max is up

Former Missouri star Max Scherzer is up with the Diamondbacks and now the organization has a decision to make: Put him in the rotation or develop him and that mid-90s fastball into a closer.

    Tough call.

But before you start wondering why Scherzer isn’t a Royal — the Royals took Luke Hochevar over Scherzer with the first overall pick in 2006. Can’t argue with that. Scherzer wound up going at No. 11 to Arizona.

And the Royals nearly had maybe another shot at drafting Scherzer anyway — after nearly a year of holding out, he signed moments before Arizona would have lost the rights to him last June.
