High school singers try out for KC SuperStar

More than 100 singers from the metropolitan area’s high schools auditioned last Sunday at the Jewish Community Center hoping to be this year’s KC SuperStar in the “American Idol” style competition produced by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, and organizers expect another 100 to try out this coming Sunday.

They say “A dog is one of the remaining reasons why some people can be persuaded to go for a walk.” That theory is put to the test at the inaugural Downtown Dog Day, which kicks off with a one-mile walk that begins at the Farmers Market Pavilion and loops down Santa Fe. Live music accompanies the gathering, as do doggy bags packed with treats and special offers. Judges hand out prizes for the best-dressed pooches. The event benefits the Great Plains SPCA, a KC-based animal welfare organization. 9 a.m., April 5. Downtown Overland Park, 79th St. & Santa Fe Dr. downtown op.org. Free.
