A 16-year-old girl was killed and three other people were injured in a two-car crash late Saturday in Independence that police say was probably alcohol related.
The crash occurred about 11:36 p.m. near U.S. 24 and Davis Road in eastern Independence. According to police, a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 19-year-old Blue Springs man was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 when it struck an eastbound 1995 Plymouth Neon.
The driver of the Neon, a 17-year-old Independence girl, and a 15-year-old Buckner girl who was a passenger, were taken to area hospitals with injuries. Another passenger in the Neon, a 16-year-old Independence girl, died at the scene.
Police said the driver of the Malibu was taken to a hospital and later arrested. The suspect's name will not be released until charges are filed, most likely on Monday, police said. The victims' names will not be released until all families have been notified.
The accident was the sixth fatal crash in Independence this year, police said, compared with nine during the same period last year.
