One Missouri man died and another was hospitalized with hypothermia after their utility boat capsized Wednesday at Pomme de Terre Lake.
John Smith, 78, and another man, 76, both of Springfield had stopped to eat lunch, but their boat overturned when one of them stood up, according to a preliminary report from the Missouri State Water Patrol. The men tried to put on life jackets, but one jacket floated away, leaving Smith without.
The pair clung to the side of their boat for about 40 minutes until another boat came by and towed them to shore.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy may be needed to confirm his cause of death, patrol officials said.
The other man was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
