About the stories

The Kansas City Star has spent months re-examining the 20-year-old firefighters explosion case, conducting hundreds of interviews and reviewing 30,000 pages of court and investigative files and documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

This is Mike McGraw’s third report as a result of that investigation. The first was published Feb. 18, 2007, and the second March 8, 2007.

The newspaper also reviewed and verified additional information developed by Kansas Citian Pat O’Connor, who has worked to free the five defendants in the case, and the late J.J. Maloney, a former reporter for The Star. Maloney wrote a two-part series critical of the convictions that was published in 1997 in the New Times newspaper.

Mike McGraw is a projects reporter and winner of numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for a series on the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Contact him at 816-234-4423 or mcgraw@kcstar.com

The stories were edited by Bill Dalton, Enterprise/Projects Editor. Contact him at 816-234-4919 or bdalton@kcstar.com.

Dave Eames produced the graphics, Chris Oberholtz produced the photoillustration, Charles Gooch designed the pages, Todd Feeback produced the videos, and Don Munday was the copy editor.
