Harry Truman was born 124 years ago today.
The former president’s birthday is a state holiday in Missouri, and state offices will be closed. Many employees of Jackson County and the city of Independence also will have the day off.
The Truman Museum in Independence, however, will open early, at 8:30 a.m., in advance of a 9 a.m. wreath-laying at the former president’s gravesite in the library courtyard.
At 1:30 p.m., birthday cake will be served and local Truman re-enactor Niel Johnson will arrive to greet guests. At 5 p.m., a screening of a Truman biography prepared for the PBS American Experience “The Presidents” series will be shown in the library auditorium.
Those attending just the wreath-laying or the screening will be admitted free at the museum, 500 W. U.S. 24. Other events are free with regular admission.
On Sunday, in honor of the former president’s affection for his mother, Martha Ellen Truman, free admission will be given to all mothers.
