The Watchdog | Traffic light gets tweaked

More News

The problem

Kelly Luden of Kansas City thought the traffic light at Elmwood Avenue and Hickman Mills Drive was off kilter. She said it favored traffic on Hickman Mills Drive to the point that as soon as a car approached the intersection on Hickman Mills, the light changed to red for traffic on Elmwood.

“This may have been because there was not much traffic going into the old Marion building for the past few years,” Luden said. “But now that the old Marion building is occupied again, there are many cars that now have to stop for a single car that has just approached the intersection on Hickman Mills.”

The answer

City traffic engineers reviewed the situation and made signal adjustments to improve the rush-hour traffic flow. They’re also keeping an eye on the situation to see if more tweaks are needed.

“Please thank your reader for bringing this to our attention,” said Dennis Gagnon of the Kansas City Public Works Department.

Consider it done, Dennis. And who says being the Watchdog is a thankless job?
