<strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | Homicide victim identified</span></strong></p><p>Police on Tuesday identified a man killed in a shootout Friday near 31st Street and Prospect Avenue as Tyler R. Creal, 19, of Kansas City. Witnesses saw him chasing two men through a strip mall parking lot while exchanging gunfire with them. </p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | Weapons charge filed</span></strong></p><p>Federal prosecutors charged a Kansas City man Tuesday with possessing firearms while being in the country illegally. Jesus Antonio Valdez-Varela, 38, was arrested after Kansas City police detectives investigated a tip about a man allegedly selling methamphetamine to area gang members.</p><p>Police recovered a handgun and two rifles, including a semi-automatic version of a military assault rifle, according to court documents. Police also recovered ammunition and $9,000.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">OVERLAND PARK | Motorcyclist killed</span></strong></p><p>A 27-year-old Overland Park man died Monday night after slamming into the back of a police car.</p><p>Jason Vaughn Chronister was killed in the crash that occurred about 7:25 p.m. along Blue Valley Parkway over U.S. 69 in Overland Park.</p><p>Chronister was riding his 2004 Triumph motorcycle south on Blue Valley Parkway in the left lane when he struck an Overland Park police car, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.</p><p>The patrol car was legally parked in the left lane of Blue Valley Parkway and had its emergency lights activated, according to the Highway Patrol.</p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | Two charged after police standoff</span></strong></p><p>Prosecutors charged two men Tuesday in a theft ring investigation that ended in a police standoff Monday. The standoff began after police spotted three men unloading items from a truck and trailer that were reported stolen. Police arrested Jeremy M. Boynton, 29, at his home in the 5000 block of Belmead Avenue, where police recovered the stolen items as well as a stolen car and two stolen motorcycles.</p><p>Police also arrested Sean E. Opalka, 32, of Independence. Both men were charged with tampering and theft. </p><p><strong><span class="subhead">KANSAS CITY | IRS worker admits mail thefts</span></strong></p><p>An Internal Revenue Service employee pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing mail that was delivered to the IRS facility on Pershing Road. A federal grand jury had indicted Latrice Antionette Murray, 38, of Kansas City, in September. She admitted to rifling through mail and stealing cash or gift cards. A sentencing date will be set later.
