Edwardsville voters denied a half-cent sales tax increase today.
The measure failed by a vote of 185 to 165. The increase was to be used for basic city services rather than a particular project. The tax, which would not have had an expiration date, was expected to generate $170,000 a year and begin on April 1. It would have taken the overall sales tax in the city from 7.30 percent to 7.80 percent. The overall sales tax in neighboring Bonner Springs is 8.050 percent. In Kansas City, Kan., the rate varies from 7.550 percent to 8.550 percent.
