CASS COUNTY | Police seek woman in slaying

Cass County authorities were looking for a woman Sunday after a man was shot and killed in rural Cass County.

Steven Lawrence, 35, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Cpl. Kevin Tieman said authorities received a call about 2 p.m. regarding a shooting in the 1100 block of North Lyne Street between Raymore and Lee’s Summit.

Tieman said authorities were searching for a woman who was seen leaving the scene in a white Ford F-250 pickup.

INDEPENDENCE | Crash kills 16-year-old girl

A 16-year-old girl was killed and three other people were injured in a two-car crash late Saturday in Independence that police said was probably alcohol related.

The crash occurred about 11:36 p.m. near U.S. 24 and Davis Road in eastern Independence. According to police, a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 19-year-old Blue Springs man was heading west in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 when it struck an eastbound 1995 Plymouth Neon.

The driver of the Neon, a 17-year-old Independence girl, and a 15-year-old Buckner girl who was a passenger were taken to hospitals with injuries. Another passenger in the Neon, a 16-year-old Independence girl, died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Malibu was taken to a hospital and later arrested.

LEE’S SUMMIT | One dead, one injured in crash

A single-car accident Sunday killed a Lee’s Summit man and left his brother in serious condition.

Jonathan T. Ferris, 26, was pronounced dead soon after the accident in Lafayette County about 10:50 a.m. He was a passenger in a car driven by his brother, Christopher M. Ferris, 24, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol. Christopher was flown from the scene by a helicopter ambulance.

The car was traveling south on Missouri 131 when it lost control on a hill and curve. The car left the road and hit a ditch and a fence.

INDEPENDENCE | Four shot outside bar

Independence police are investigating a fight outside a bar early Sunday that left four people with gunshot wounds.

Police responded to reports of a fight outside the Do Drop In, 10520 E. U.S. 40, at 1:15 a.m. Three people were taken to a hospital, and a fourth victim arrived there later. Police said none of the victims had life-threatening injuries.

OLATHE | Man dies after fire at duplex

A man critically injured in an Olathe duplex fire Saturday night has died from his injuries, fire officials said Sunday.

Olathe firefighters pulled the 74-year-old man from the duplex at 1039 N. Jan-Mar Drive after the fire started about 7 p.m. Saturday. The man’s wife, who suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation, managed to get out on her own.

The fire, which was caused by smoking while using home medical oxygen, was extinguished in minutes and caused about $5,000 damage, fire officials said.

Fire officials said the man’s identity has not been released pending notification of relatives.

KANSAS CITY | Relatives of man sought

The Jackson County medical examiner’s office is trying to find relatives of Edwin Hernandez, 49, who was found dead at City Union Mission. Anyone with information regarding family members willing to claim his body is asked to call the on-duty investigator at 816-881-6604.
