A man wanted for 10 years in a Wisconsin child sexual assault case was arrested Monday morning in Overland Park by U.S. Marshals.
Carlos Gonzalez, 32, was taken into custody at a house in the 7500 block of Newton. Authorities said he was originally arrested in Sheboygan, Wis., in October 1999, but he posted bail and fled.
The case went cold in part because Gonzalez had given Sheboygan police a fraudulent ID with a false name. Detectives were about to give up on the case recently but decided to submit a fingerprint he had used on the fake ID.
“It’s kind of like chasing a ghost, but it worked out in our favor,” said Paul Olsen, a Sheboygan police detective who is assigned to the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force in Milwaukee.
An FBI database said that it matched the fingerprint of an Overland Park man who was arrested in June. It also showed that immigration officials are investigating the man’s citizenship status.
Matt Cahill of the U.S. Marshals Service said authorities are concerned that Gonzalez may have had other victims in the area. Anyone with information is asked to call their local police department or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
