This week at the Royal | Livestock, cowboys and bucking bulls

More News

In October 1899, Kansas City’s West Bottoms played host to the first nationwide show for the exposition and sale of purebred cattle.

The three-day National Hereford Show drew 541 registered Herefords and is credited with being the official beginning of the American Royal.

Now, 110 years later, the livestock show features youths from 37 states showing and selling more than 4,000 cattle, lambs, goats and hogs.

“The livestock show is what made the American Royal famous,” organization president Jim McNair said. “It is one of the roots of our city’s heritage, and we are proud to host it year after year.”
