    Hope stays afloat for Truman yacht repairs

    The former president’s yacht, the USS Williamsburg, has had one tow line in the grave for 20 years, about as long as it has been deteriorating at a shipyard in northern Italy. But hope remains among those who would like to see the 243-foot vessel returned to glory. The price, however, is high, and rust is merciless.

    Report card shows states have a lot of infrastructure work to do

    Bridges in Kansas: D-plus. Dams in Missouri: D-minus. Overall infrastructure across both states: Does C-minus earn anyone a star? Civil engineers are tough graders. A few gathered in Kansas City on Wednesday to deliver a report card that pretty much stank.

    Bernanke signals Fed to maintain stimulus efforts

    Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Wednesday that the U.S. job market remains weak and that it is too soon for the Federal Reserve to slow its extraordinary stimulus programs.

    IRS operations in KC, nationwide to close Friday because of federal budget constraints

    All IRS operations will also be closed and workers will be furloughed on June 14, July 5, July 22 and Aug. 30. The agency said it may possibly announce one or two additional closing dates later this year. The closures also include staffing all IRS toll-free hotlines, the nearly 400 taxpayer assistance centers nationwide and the taxpayer advocate service.

    Summer dining: Savor the season’s fresh flavors

    Restaurant patios around the city are abuzz with al fresco diners eager to sip and sup under the stars. Festivals are in full swing, serving up barbecue, cotton candy and street food. Farmers markets on both sides of the state line supply shoppers with local produce for bountiful dinners on the grill.
