Mike DeArmond: No Long Goodbye
As many know, today is my last day at The Star, my last coverage of a Missouri athletic event. A lot of lasts.
I will not belabor the point. I won't be authoring goodbye column. I have too man hello's upcoming in my retirement at the upcoming 62nd birthday.
I am humbled by the many expressions from readers, from fellow journalists, and yes even my detractors who have for the moment (most anyway) put down the put downs. Hey, I gave and understand I deserve to receive.
To Missouri fans, give your attention to Terez Paylor, the young reporter who is the journalist who will now (and who has been for a while alongside me) chronicle all things Mizzou athletics. I feel good about the handoff, because Terez not only wants to do a terrific job but has the talent to do it.
To all who care, know that I always cared. Still do. Always will.

Tennessee State victory had KC flavor
Feb 10, 9:44 AMThere was a Kansas City flavor to Tennessee State's upset of undefeated and ninth-ranked Murray State on Thursday. John Cooper, the Tigers coach, is Kansas Citian and Rockhurst High graduate. When he was young, Cooper spent his mid-March days and evenings at Kemper Arena watching the NAIA Tournament. When Cooper, then an Auburn assistant, interviewed for the Tennessee State job three years he spoke passionately of the Tigers' hoop history, not because he had studied it in a history book but because NAIA fans talked about those old teams coached by John McLendon. People who attend the NAIA tournament know that Tennessee State, led by Dick Barnett and John Barnhill, won three straight championships and became the first historically black college to win an integrated college basketball tournament. Cooper, who played under Eddie Fogler at Wichita State, brought that connection to the Nashville school. Thursday's victory was the first as a Division I program over a nationally ranked team and improved the Tigers' record to 16-10

Fisher says he's been granted sixth year of eligibility
Feb 8, 11:38 AMIt appears Missouri's pain in 2011 with be its gain in 2012. Left tackle Elvis Fisher, a three-year starter before he missed the entire 2011 campaign with a knee injury, tweeted at 5:09 p.m. Tuesday that he's been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. "It's official now! I got my 6th year!" Fisher tweeted from his account, @ElvisFisher72. If true - Missouri director of media relations Chad Moller did not confirm it when reached Tuesday - it is certainly terrific news for the Tigers, who are set to enter their first year in the super-physical Southeastern Conference. Fisher, a 6-foot-5, 295-pounder, worked hard to rehab the knee after he suffered the injury during preseason drills in August

Denmon named Big 12 player of the week
Feb 6, 12:30 PMMissouri senior guard Marcus Denmon was named Big 12 player of the week Monday, which is - as our good friend Mike DeArmond put it on Twitter - a "sort of no-duh piece of news." Seriously, anyone who saw Denmon light up Kansas in a 74-71 win on Saturday for 29 points - including nine during a crucial second-half run in which he led the Tigers back from an eight-point deficit - saw this honor coming. It marks the third time in his career that he has earned the honor. However, it was revealed Monday that Denmon is one of 20 players selected to the midseason watch list of the Oscar Robertson Award, which will be presented to the national player of the year on March 30

A fan's Border War open letter to Bill Self
Feb 6, 8:15 AMFirst off, let me assure you I didn't write this open letter to Kansas basketball coach Bill Self. I personally am on record as supporting the stance of the woman who sent it to me and other media outlets, that Kansas and Missouri should continue their Border War rivalry as a non-conference matchup in any and all sports. But let's face it, primarily in football and men's basketball. I'll add only one editorial comment to what you are about to read: Self was arrogantly and impudently wrong in telling us on Saturday night that fans don't drive the bus. Bill, as someone reminded me after reading your comment, fans bought the bus, keep it fueled, hire the driver and pay people to ride on it

Semi Ojeleye creates buzz after scoring 50 points in a game
Feb 3, 9:54 AMIf you didn't know Semi Ojeleye scored 50 points in a high school basketball game earlier this week, you need to pay closer attention. Seriously, it was all over the Internet. But if this is the first you're hearing about it, here's the skinny: Ojeleye, a 6-foot-6 junior small forward out of Ottawa who is the brother of Kansas State senior Victor Ojeleye, hit eight three-pointers, made all 10 of his free throws and scored a career-high 50 points during a 103-70 win over Spring Hill. "I started off the game making my first three or four shots," Ojeleye said

Will Big 12 punish Frank Martin for comments after Iowa State loss?
Feb 2, 2:35 PMI received a few questions via twitter and e-mail yesterday from readers asking if there was any chance the Big 12 Conference will punish Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin for the critical comments he made of the officiating crew following a 72-70 loss at Iowa State on Tuesday. The answer: Maybe. According to Rob Carolla, the Big 12′s Director of Communications who works closely with all the men’s basketball teams, interim commissioner Chuck Neinas is aware of the situation and will take a look Martin’s comments to decide if he violated the conference’s sportsmanship policy. If Neinas doesn’t think he did, there will be no penalty

Andy Hill stakes Missouri claim to Kansas City
Feb 2, 9:05 AMFor 16 years Andy Hill has been the recruiting face of Missouri in Greater Kansas City and the Border War counties of western Missouri and eastern Kansas. And to those who contend Mizzou's move the SEC from the Big 12 will mark an MU secession from that region? Well, here's what Hill had to say on that subject: "Yeah, there are some guys who say it is Big 12 country and all that stuff. But Missouri is still Missouri

Spoonball won on both sides of Missouri
Feb 1, 1:45 PMNext to Norm Stewart, no major college basketball coach had a greater influence in Missouri than Charlie Spoonhour, who died on Wednesday. At Southwest Missouri State, now Missouri State, and St. Louis University, Spoonhour created winners with a defensive brand called "Spoonball." Spoonhour nurtured the Bears through the early years of its Division I membership and never had a losing record in nine seasons (1983-1992)
