Blue Springs native is first active men’s college basketball player to say he’s gay
Jallen Messersmith, a 20-year-old from Blue Springs who blocked 53 shots for the Benedictine men’s basketball team last season, told Outsports.com that he is gay. The national sports website, which covers gay sports issues, published his story Tuesday. He is believed to be the first active men’s college basketball player who is openly gay.

MU appears be adding another post player with center from Illinois
Despite taking three big men in its incoming recruiting class, it appears Missouri coach Frank Haith will be adding another post player to the mix in the fall. Hayden Barnard, a 6-foot-9 center from Aurora, Ill., has decided to enroll at Missouri as a preferred walk-on in the fall, according to Metea Valley High School coach Bob Vozza.

Baker’s Jeremy Gathright became his school’s first NAIA individual champion with a first-place finish in the 400 meters and Lincoln University’s women finished third and the men finished sixth at the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships.

Deuce Bello will transfer from Baylor to Missouri
Former Baylor swingman Deuce Bello — once ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 54 player in the country — has decided to transfer to Mizzou. “I just feel like the coaching staff is good, and I’ve been cool with (associate coach) Tim (Fuller) for a while,” Bello said. “At Baylor, we played Mizzou three times and I like their style of play.”
