Flea market frugality
Extravagant ideas don’t have to carry a price tag to match, and “The Find” (Crown Publishing Group; $27.50) is brimming with ways to prove it.
New energy for 1960s chairs and a quirky plaster squirrel that fits a party theme are only a couple of ideas inside this photo-filled guide by Stan Williams, subtitled “The Housing Works Book of Decorating With Thrift Shop Treasures, Flea Market Objects, and Vintage Details.”
Williams, who grew up in Independence, highlights three area décor standouts in the book.
•David Jimenez, vice president of visual merchandising and store design at Hallmark, has a 1906 Georgian Revival home in Hyde Park. Among his clever mix of old and new: a painted cast-iron coat rack, white vinyl upholstered wing chairs, a Knoll Barcelona chair and a re-covered 1970s sofa.
•Photographer Bob Greenspan’s 1957 home in Overland Park is a creative, California-inspired modern beauty. The book notes its fiery red fireplace, custom bathroom vanity (converted from 1950s furniture) and a grouping of globes.
•Sharleen Reeder’s shop in Independence, Luticia Clementine’s, believes in repurposing, such as pairing up mismatched cups and saucers for garden art.
Who’ll like this book: Curiosity seekers.
Who won’t: Bed-in-a-bag buyers.
Best piece of advice: “Before you head out on a thrifty scavenger hunt, take a loose inventory of what you already own and form some ideas of what you would like to find.”
Style in a nutshell: Head-turning, statement-making rooms.
