Computer-guided lasers crackle as they slice into a piece of steel at ICF Industries’ new production facility. Across the room, massive punch machines penetrate metal sheets with pinpoint accuracy. Although the Pleasant Hill firm has invested heavily in its plant and the tools of the trade, CEO Bob Krug said equipment isn’t what sets the company apart from other metal fabricators.

Kansas Citians will be among the tens of thousands of people coming together worldwide next week to mark Global Entrepreneurship Week. The weeklong celebration, set for Nov. 16-22, was co-founded last year by the Kansas City-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Noteworthy | Apps for Samsung; nominate a Small Business of the Year

Apps for Samsung Kansas City-based Handmark last week announced the launch of a global venture fund to invest in companies and/or individuals with innovative game ideas for next-generation Samsung mobile phones. Winning ideas will receive up to $250,000 to fund development. Handmark said the fund will be managed out of its Kansas City and London offices in partnership with Samsung Electronics. Applications open for spring session of Artist Inc. seminar

Artists will be able to get answers to questions about how to start and manage a business in an upcoming seminar put on by a group of area arts organizations. KCArtistLink, which includes the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City, the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Missouri Business & Technology Development Center, is accepting applications for the Spring 2010 seminar, called Artist Inc.
